Government plans to help property developers by reducing energy efficiency are being debated in Parliament this week. They will mean new blocks of flats in Sheffield city centre will no longer have to meet the current standards for energy efficiency, low-carbon or renewable energy supplies.
Whilst property developers will make bigger profits, future residents will pay more in fuel bills for lower quality accommodation. Jobs and expertise in energy efficient construction will be lost. Reducing energy use is critical for everyone and house-building is one of the most important areas where we can really make a difference in tackling climate change.
