The Star has exposed the amount of profit – £9million a year in total – made
by the large companies with whom the council has contracts. The Green Party
is horrified by the cuts being imposed by the Coalition Government on
northern City Councils, including Sheffield, which will lead to massive cuts
in jobs and services. But in these difficult times it is all the more
important to make sure every penny is well spent. By bringing services “in
house” the council could save money currently siphoned off into share
holders’ pockets. We could also save jobs and narrow the gap between the
highest and lowest paid by reducing the pay of council officers earning over
£50k a year.
