Save independent shops on Devonshire Street!
Green Councillors want the city council to do more to support independent businesses. The latest ones to come under threat are the shops on Devonshire Street (along the edge of Devonshire Green). Developers want to replace one end of this block with restaurants and bars. We support the campaign for the planning committee to overturn this application.
Cllr Creasy said,
“Losing the shops at the shops at the end of Devonshire Street will be the final nail in the coffin for small independent businesses in the this area like Rare and Racy and Filibuster and Booth, as the character of the area becomes “clone-club or clone-coffee house”. There will be nothing left to make Devonshire Green distinctive or interesting and no home-grown businesses, which keep profits circulating in the local economy.
“The Council set out a clear vision for the Devonshire Quarter, that it should be an “urban village” with a good mix of housing, shops, restaurants and bars (including night time uses) and green spaces. The Devonshire Quarter Action Plan, which is a material consideration in planning decisions, contains specific guidance aimed at preserving this balance. But successive planning committees have allowed this to slip, letting developers do what pays them best, i.e. small apartments and late night drinking. They are strangling the last remaining golden geese.”

I cannot and will not allow this to happen!
The shops on Devonshire Street are some of the most charming, lovely places in Sheffield. As a regular visitor to these shops, it would break my heart to see them destroyed in cold blood.
Over the years, I have developed a friendly relationship with the shopkeepers, who would most certainly share in my despair.
I beg the Arctic Monkeys to put their entire heart and soul into this campaign, along with anyone else who believes they can make a difference.
PLEASE.
