Radios for Burma

Dear Sir

It was great to be on a stall again at the annual Peace & Craft Fair at the Town Hall on November 13th. It’s an unusual mix of campaigns and Christmas shopping but it works. Even better, Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest in Burma during the fair. Sheffield gave her the Freedom of the City in 2006 as its contribution to the continuing worldwide pressure exerted on the Burmese authorities.

I don’t think Amnesty International had a stall this year but they do have a campaign to distribute 10000 radios in Burma. Access to a radio can cut through censorship in Burma to allow people to get independent information, outside of state control, on stations including the BBC World Service. Aung Sang Suu Kyi’s message to the world is “Please use your liberty to promote ours”. It’s a good campaign for people to support this Christmas – a present to the suppressed people of Burma.

Yours Sincerely
